- First graders begin their artistic skill building in color, drawing & watercolors and guided painting stories. They progress to form drawing related to their lessons and sculpt figures using beeswax. Practical arts such as knitting are also introduced so the students can explore mathematics through hands-on artistic work to create a multicolor scarf.
- In second grade artistic work continues with more complex drawings that accompany writing and arithmetic work. Knitting based on a simple pattern expands their practical arts skill building.
- For the third graders, visual and practical arts curriculum continues with painting, sculpting, illustration and from drawing with emphasis on combined horizontal and vertical symmetry. Practical arts expand with crocheting and weaving.
- By fourth grade, students are incorporating their artistic skills in academic studies relating to Norse mythology, California history, fractions and animal studies. Cross-stitch and needlepoint are the practical arts taught this year.
- In fifth grade, botany studies lend themselves to drawing and painting a range of plants while lesson books about ancient civilizations contain colorful academic drawings that the students can appreciate. Practical arts classes this year focus on learning patterning while knitting socks on 4 needles.
