En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air" and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called peinture sur le motif ("painting of the object(s) or what the eye actually sees") in French.

Enjoy soulful, transportative paintings that capture that feeling you had when you last visited Northern California. Plein air painting departs the stuffy indoor studio and takes painting out into the air, where the sun influences the ever-changing colors of the day and clouds never stop to pose. Plein air painting offers artists unique challenges and takes away the controls that allow the painter to work for hours in an indoor studio session. Plein artists are the "wild bunch" of the art world, challenging the paradigm.

Sonoma Plein Air is a week long wine country art event celebrating the century-old technique of outdoor painting. The annual gathering of artists culminates at Sonoma’s Historic Plaza for The Art Exhibition and Sale on Saturday.

Perfect for a Sonoma Valley getaway, girlfriend's weekend, mellow days of wine and art.
